Media workshop: The “Two Sessions” under the shadow of the Russian invasion in Ukraine

Mar 02, 2022 09:00 - 10:00

From March 4 and 5, the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) will take place in Beijing. But the ‘Two Sessions’, a key event in China’s political calendar, are now overshadowed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Beijing’s response to this dramatic event shows that China is attempting to strike a balance between its competing interests in this crisis - it wants to maintain its reinvigorated ties with Russia and prevent relations with liberal market democracies from deteriorating further.

The Mercator Institute for China Studies will hold a virtual media workshop on March 2, at 9 a.m. CET to discuss China’s position on the Ukraine war and the conflict’s impact on the forthcoming ‘Two Sessions’

Speakers:

Mikko Huotari, Executive Director, MERICS

Jacob Gunter, Senior Analyst, Economics Program,

Helena Legarda, Lead Analyst, MERICS

Moderator: Claudia Wessling, Director Communication and Publications, MERICS
